Students across Nigerian public universities are on edge as the one-month renegotiation window given to the Federal Government (FG) by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) reaches a critical stage. The union suspended its warning strike earlier to allow talks to proceed, but it has warned that the next move depends on the government’s final actions.
Where talks stand
The FG’s renegotiation team, headed by the committee led by Yayale Ahmed, has been meeting with ASUU to address core demands including salary arrears, university funding, and the replacement of IPPIS with a university-friendly payroll system. While talks have been described as ongoing, ASUU has complained about slow implementation of agreed items and retains the option of industrial action if its demands are not met. Is a strike imminent?
