Six years ago, on September 10, 2019, the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) witnessed a tragedy that will never be forgotten. What started as a peaceful protest by students over poor electricity supply escalated into chaos when security forces ( Policemen) clashed with the students.
In the course of the incident, two students lost their lives:
Oluwaseyi “Dada” Kehinde
Joseph Okonofua
These young men were full of dreams and potential, but their lives were cut short while standing for what they believed in. Their deaths shook the entire FUOYE community and remain a painful reminder of the importance of student welfare, safety, and dialogue.
Today, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) and the FUOYE community at large are holding a remembrance in their honor. There are also moves to name the STUDENT UNION BUILDING (SUB) and hanging of frame on campus after them, ensuring their names and sacrifice are never forgotten.
Just in Today, the FUOYESUG under the leadership of OGBENII ADIO came together in solidarity for the Remembrance Walk,a solemn yet powerful procession to honour the lives of Joseph Icon and Dada Kehinde, our comrades who fell 6years ago for a good cause.
This remembrance is more than just looking back. It is a call to:
Cherish the memory of our brothers who paid the ultimate price.B
uild a safer, more peaceful, and united campus.
Stand for justice and fairness in our community.
As we mark this day, may the legacy of Dada Kehinde and Joseph Okonofua continue to inspire courage, unity, and positive change at FUOYE.
