A tragic incident occurred on Saturday evening in the Moro area of Osun State, claiming the life of a young student from the Centre for Distance Learning (CDL), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

The heartbreaking event happened near a private student hostel along the Moro/Ife Road when the student, whose identity is yet to be made public, joined a group of fellow students for a friendly game of football.

According to those present, the ball flew over a fence into an adjoining compound. The deceased volunteered to fetch the ball and successfully threw it back to his mates. However, while climbing back over the fence, he tragically came in contact with a fallen high-tension wire, allegedly brought down by heavy rainfall a day before.

Eyewitnesses said he was electrocuted instantly. Fellow students quickly acted by removing the wire with a stick and rushing him to a nearby private hospital in Ipetumodu, but sadly, he was confirmed dead upon arrival.

The OAU Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, confirmed the incident, describing the student as a bright individual who had aspirations to move into the main university programme after completing his CDL studies.

“This was a heartbreaking loss. He had just joined the game and was trying to be helpful. Unfortunately, he had no idea a live wire was waiting on the other side of the fence,” Olanrewaju stated.

In a show of support, the Director of the CDL, Prof. Femi Koya, has reportedly contacted the victim’s family to share the sad news personally.
