FUOYE Launches School Protection Squad to Strengthen Security in Educational Institutions

Ekiti State, October 15, 2024

In response to growing security challenges in schools, the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, officially launched the School Protection Squad (SPS) at Adetiloye Hall, Ado-Ekiti. The initiative, supported by the Federal Government through the Inspector General of Police’s office, is focused on preventing future attacks by fostering proactive security measures and community involvement.

The SPS is designed to tackle issues like kidnappings, cultism, and organized crime, with a strong emphasis on collaboration between schools, traditional rulers, local youth groups, and vigilante committees. Prof. Fasina highlighted the importance of empowering communities as the first line of defense to protect the education sector. “The success of this initiative depends on the collective efforts of host communities to prevent crime at its infancy,” he stated.

With features such as early warning systems, enhanced surveillance, and community-led patrols, the SPS aims to ensure the safety of students and staff across Ekiti. The initiative is expected to restore confidence in the security of educational institutions and reinforce the government's commitment to protecting the future of Nigerian children.
